Probate and Estate Administration Fees

At The Legal Practice, we understand that dealing with probate and estate administration can be a challenging time. Our fixed-fee and transparent pricing structure ensures you have a clear understanding of the legal costs involved from the outset. Whether you need assistance obtaining a Grant of Probate, administering an estate, or handling inheritance-related matters, our experienced team provides practical guidance and professional support with no hidden fees.

Probate and Estate Administration Fees

The cost of obtaining a grant of probate and administering an estate will depend on the complexity of the estate. We set out our fees below for the most common scenarios. All fees are exclusive of VAT at 20% unless otherwise stated. VAT-inclusive figures are shown alongside.

Grant of Probate Only (Simple Estates)

Where you simply need a grant of probate or letters of administration and are able to administer the estate yourself, we offer a fixed-fee service.

Service Our Fee (ex. VAT) VAT (20%) Total (inc. VAT)
Grant of Probate — straightforward application (testate) £1,200 £240 £1,440
Letters of Administration — intestate estate £1,400 £280 £1,680
IHT400 (taxable estate) — preparation and submission From £500 From £100 From £600

Full Estate Administration

Where you require us to administer the estate in full — including collecting in assets, paying liabilities, and distributing to beneficiaries — our fees are calculated as a percentage of the gross value of the estate.

Estate Gross Value Our Fee (ex. VAT) VAT (20%) Total (inc. VAT)
Up to £150,000 2.5% of gross estate value 0.5% (of gross value) 3% of gross estate value
£150,001 – £500,000 2.75% of gross estate value 0.55% 3.3% of gross estate value
£500,001 – £1,000,000 3% of gross estate value 0.6% 3.6% of gross estate value
Over £1,000,000 3.5–4% of gross estate value (agreed in advance) 0.7–0.8% 4.2–4.8% (agreed in advance)

Example: For an estate valued at £400,000 gross, our fee would be approximately £11,000 + VAT (£2,200) = £13,200 total. This is an estimate — the final fee will be confirmed in your client care letter before work commences.
